The New Mayor Promises a 'New Era' for NYC in First Address
On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an audacious start to his term.
A Historic Mayor
The young political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.
A Costly Blueprint
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:
- Free childcare
- Free buses
- A rent freeze for about 1 million households
- A experiment of city-run grocery stores
The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing External Headwinds
The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past comments.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
