RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," he added. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
