Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Party

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master the talented storyteller has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a colorful mix of heroes, and a thrilling plot including divine entities, evil spirits, and sinister influences growing in strength within the urban setting.

Note: Spoilers for the third episode of Campaign 4 are included.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

Episode 3 finished on a dramatic pause and introduced the premier party of adventurers who will split off from the primary party to undertake their independent quest, separate from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team features Teor Pridesire (played by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).

The Reason for Division

With a large ensemble, it was evident from the beginning that maintaining everyone at one table would be unworkable.

Hence, the initial installments of this story serve as an Introduction, weaving together the individual narratives before branching into three separate parties: Warriors, Planners, and Questers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

As described by the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for participants who prefer a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven story mode where peaceful solutions are few and far between.

Upon first impression, characters like the reluctant priest the cleric might look out of place, but the events of episode 3 show why these five characters are ideally matched for the warrior group.

Reasons to Leave

First, the group understands precisely where to go next after a intense opening clash with the antagonists.

Casimir of the deceased character—whose passing kicked off the narrative’s action—exploited the enemy for his own means, breaking into the hidden lair, assaulting the character, and stealing all the powerful objects to sell off.

The antagonist then cleared his liabilities and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each adventurer has a personal reason to exit the urban setting:

  • The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, wants retribution.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in the northern area and advises that it is a nasty place.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having resisted his family’s wishes to eliminate Teor and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • However, their position as key figures in the powerful family could enable the team access places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Furthermore, The grateful character swore a unbreakable promise to The cleric for his deliverance and will now accompany him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are sought by the powers that rule Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind too risky:

  • The agile adventurer and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and The cleric turned against the powerful family and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • The target is targeted for elimination by the family.

This means them few options but to travel to the remote area in quest for the antagonist.

What’s Next?

From the recent installment’s Cooldown, we find out that the combat party will be absent next week, leaving the remaining eight players to round up the Questers and Planners tables.

Viewers can expect discovering which players will be assigned to which table in the season’s final introductory chapter, released on next week.
