Astronaut Shares Depression In the Wake of Wave of Backlash Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her lab work and years of training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She noted that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the experience, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of space.

The team of pioneers also included leaders in multiple disciplines.
